Join the Discussion: What is Yoga Sastra Sangamam?

Since 2018, Vivekananda Rock Memorial & Vivekananda Kendra Kanyakumari is organizing the International Conference on Yoga Philosophy, known as Yoga Sastra Sangamam. In collaboration with Mahatma Gandhi University, Kerala, and the Central University of Himachal Pradesh, this three-day conference convenes in February each year, attracting yoga enthusiasts from around the world to delve into discussions on Yoga Philosophy through Yoga Sastra (Yoga texts). It stands out as a unique convergence of philosophy, knowledge, and practical dimensions of Yoga.

Focus and Scope: The conference focuses on various topics, ideas, interpretations, and practices elaborated in various texts on Yoga such as Patanjali Yoga Sutras, Hatha Pradipika, Gheranda Samhita, Shiva Samhita, Vasistha Samhita, and Yoga Vasistha. Yoga Sastra Sangamam provides a platform for intense discussions and understanding of Yoga Sastra, the philosophical foundations of yoga.

Aim and Objective: The primary aim is to kindle interest among yoga students, practitioners, and teachers to discover the real purpose and knowledge of Yoga through Yoga Sastra (Yoga texts).

Uniqueness of Yoga Sastra Sangamam: Unlike other Yoga conferences that generally focus only on the physical aspects of Yoga, such as asanas, pranayama, yoga therapy, etc., Yoga Sastra Sangamam distinguishes itself by delving into the philosophical dimensions of Yoga through Yoga Sastra(Yoga texts).

Significance of Yoga Sastra: Yoga is the gift of Bharat to the world as an art and science of life-based on Dharma. Yoga finds its roots in the Vedic literature of the Sanatana Dharma. The pearls of yogic wisdom are found in Upanishads, Puranas, Itihasas and in the vast ocean of Sanskrit literature. It was Maharshi Patanjali who systematized Yoga into a Darshana Sastra – a philosophical system. The Patanjala Yoga Sutras form the foundation for all later yoga philosophies, methods and techniques. Today, Yoga is often perceived as a series of exercises, but its essence extends far beyond. To understand Yoga in its totality, a comprehensive study of Yoga Sastra is indispensable.

Contemporary Relevance: In modern times, the emphasis placed on physical aspects of Yoga often overshadows the profound teachings of Yoga Sastra. Yoga practice has become synonymous with physical exercises and gym workouts, neglecting its rich philosophical heritage. The widespread popularity and commercialization of various distorted forms of yoga, marketed as relaxation techniques or fitness routines, further dilute the essence of yoga. Recognizing this trend, Vivekananda Kendra has taken the initiative to organize Yoga Sastra Sangamam. This conference aims to revive and emphasize the philosophical dimensions of Yoga.
